Why do experiences make you happier than things?

Everyone is guilty of treating themselves (probably more than once) when payday comes around and why not – you’ve worked hard all month for that money! Usually the typical person will spend money on a new piece of jewellery, a new phone or those shoes you’ve had your eye on for ages but how many of us actually treat ourselves to an experience such as a holiday, learning to surf or ticking that big adventure trip off your bucket list?!

Statistics show that people who chose to spend their money on travel and experiences and memories are happier. The survey published in the Journal of Positive Psychology stated that people who spend their money on an expensive materialistic item would find the value and novelty of owning them will wear off within just days of the purchase, compared to an experiences creating memories that will last a lifetime!

This is not to say that buying the latest iPhone won’t make you happy, but it won’t sustain your happiness and enhance your life for as long as experience will. It’s also not to say that we should never treat ourselves, it is about realising that having the latest technology or new expensive shoes gives instant gratification and is not the be all and end all. It is certainly not something we will look back on in 20 years and think ‘I really wish I had bought that’ because chances are – we probably won’t even remember!

Advertising manages to convince and brainwash us to buy things that we don’t need by spending money that we don’t have and leaving it sitting in our wardrobes and out of our memory after the first few months.

If we can change this mentality and spend our money on experiences that will enhance our lives and fill it with cherished memories and unforgettable adventures then we will all live happier! See it as an investment in your happiness!

Some of our Bucket List trips can seem quite expensive if you have to pay it all in one chunk but with the option to pay in monthly instalments from the moment you book until the moment you leave – spreading the cost over an average of 18 months could mean paying as little as £100 a month! That’s only £25 a week, which is roughly £3.50 a day – the cost of a Starbucks Coffee! So next time you’re in Starbucks… think to yourself – Do I really need this coffee? Or could it be paying for my bucket list adventure!

and in the end its not the years in your life that count its the life in your years time quote

Life is short and it is down to us to make the most of it!

It is about memories, not about diamonds.
