How To Cycle From Kilimanjaro To Ngorongoro

Share this article:

When most people think about Kilimanjaro, trekking and climbing is the first thing that springs to mind. But what about cycling?

Adventure trekking in Kilimanjaro is definitely an unforgettable experience, but it’s not the only activity you can do in that area – cycling in the area has grown hugely in popularity, and one of the best trips is the cycle route that takes you from the famous Kilimanjaro to the Ngorongoro Crater.

Here’s what you can expect when on an incredible cycling tour in Tanzania:

DAY 1

The trip kicks off with your arrival in Tanzania, and after landing at the airport you’ll be transferred to Moshi Town, right at the foot of Kilimanjaro.

After meeting your guide, you’ll do the bike fitting and check that you’ve got everything necessary for the long ride ahead of you, and you should have time for a quick test ride before dinner.

DAY 2

Day two gets you warmed up slowly with a 64km, taking you from the green, southern side of Mt Kilimanjaro towards dryer climes on the western side of the mountain.

You’ll head through coffee and banana plantations, and see some incredible views of Kilimanjaro as well as (hopefully) experiencing some of the amazing wildlife.

As well as the fabulous views and great wildlife, you’re also highly likely to meet the nomadic Maasai people.

DAY 3

Day three gets a little bit more difficult, as you cycle 83km towards Arusha City. It’ll be a hot and dusty day, but you won’t be heading into the sweltering metropolis – you’ll head off through a coffee estate as you near Arusha and spend the night at a lodge.

DAY 4

This is the big one – you’ll need your strength for day four as you journey the 102km from Arusha to Tarangire National Park.

The good news is that the terrain isn’t too tough – you’ll be heading through towns, villages and open plains, and mot of the way will be tarmacked.

But it isn’t all super smooth riding, after the tarmac you’ll head down the dirt road to the campsite right on the border of the Tarangire National Park – home to the largest concentration of elephants in Tanzania.

DAY 5

Day five is a spectacular one, with a 74km ride taking you through the migratory wildlife corridors between Lake Manyara and Tarangire national Parks.

During the day you’ll notice a number of Maasai settlements and amazing wildlife as well as incredible views of the Great Rift Valley, before heading towards Mto wa Mbu town and getting to the campsite.

DAY 6

Day six is your final day of cycling, and it’s actually the shortest distance wise at 43km.

However, don’t let that fool you as the final stretch to the Ngorongoro Crater is the toughest section of the entire trip. (It’s still worth it though!)

You’ll start off heading back to the main road, and past Mto wa Mbu and the incredible Lake Manyara National Park.

Then it’s uphill, up the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with incredible views back over the national park – there’ll be plenty of time to take some truly breathtaking pictures here.

Then it’s onwards, past Karatu and towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the ride finally finishes!

This ride is like nothing else out there, and if you prefer cycling to trekking, then quite simply, it needs to be on your bucket list!  If you’re interested in doing it, check out our page HERE!
