Best Things To Do In Croatia And Montenegro

If you’ve got Croatia and Montenegro on your bucket list (or near the top) then you’re off to a great start – we love both countries too!

While not as well travelled as the more traditional summer holiday destinations in mainland Europe, Croatia and Montenegro offer a unique combination of Mediterranean climate and culture combined with a distinctly Balkan experience.

It’s that marriage between the two, plus some gorgeous scenery, experiences, and attractions, that make our Croatia and Montenegro Adventure trip one of our very favourites…

Not least because it’s something a little bit different for us – it’s not all about mountain trekking for one!

While we jest, we have a serious love for Croatia and Montenegro, and you can read about some of our favourite things to do there…

Visiting Lopud

The first day of our trip sees everyone arrive in Dubrovnik before transferring over to Lopud.

It’s there that’s we’ll all meet as a group before enjoying the sandy beaches, quaint restaurants and a laid-back atmosphere before the trip begins.

If you’re looking for something fun to fill your evening, checking out Sunj beach, hiking over to Sutvrac Fortress (16th century ruins) for views over the Adriatic Sea or exploring the Franciscan Monastery that dates back to 1483 should be high on your agenda.

The monastery is actually Lopud’s main historical attraction, and you’ll find plenty of Renaissance art, carved choir stalls and a 30-metre bell tower.

Find out more about our first day in Lopud in our Croatia and Montenegro Adventure trip here.

The Green Cave and Sipan Island

The Green Cave (Zelena Spilja) on the island of Sipan is a breathtaking natural wonder.

This sea cave is renowned for its emerald-green waters, created by the refraction of sunlight through an underwater opening. Visitors can swim or snorkel in the cave’s crystal-clear waters, marvelling at the vibrant hues and exploring the underwater world.

Sipan Island itself is part of the Elaphiti Islands archipelago, known for its lush vegetation, olive groves, and charming villages.

Kayaking in Tresteno

Tresteno, a picturesque village near Dubrovnik, offers an idyllic setting for kayaking adventures. Paddle beneath towering limestone cliffs and explore hidden coves and secluded beaches along the Adriatic coast.

The calm waters provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty and discover secluded spots inaccessible by land.

If you’re a big fan of getting into the water, you’ll love this part of the trip (amongst others!). Kayaking is always great fun, but Tresteno offers a kayaking experience like little else in a setting that’s truly memorable.

Dubrovnik Old Town

The UNESCO-listed Old Town of Dubrovnik is a true gem of Croatia’s Adriatic coast.

Wander through its narrow, cobblestone streets lined with Renaissance and Baroque architecture, admire the iconic city walls that have withstood the test of time, and soak in the rich history and cultural heritage that make this city a true highlight.

Highlights include the Stradun (main street), the Rector’s Palace, and the Franciscan Monastery.

White Water Rafting in Brstanovica and Hiking Piva Lake and Tara Canyon

Experience the thrill of white-water rafting on the Tara River in Brstanovica, Montenegro. Navigate through the stunning Tara Canyon, one of the deepest river canyons in Europe, surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery.

The Tara River offers rapids ranging from Class II to Class IV, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters.

One of our favourite parts of our Croatian and Montenegrin adventure comes on day 6 of our trip, where we hike above Piva Lake and Tara Canyon, with views you’ll never forget.

Embarking on a hiking adventure in the stunning Piva Lake and Tara Canyon region of Montenegro is a sight to behold…

You’ll traverse scenic trails that offer panoramic views of the crystal-clear Piva Lake and the awe-inspiring Tara Canyon, immersing yourself in the region’s rugged beauty.

The area is part of the Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its diverse flora and fauna.

Kotor Bay and Cavtat

Discover the picturesque Kotor Bay, often referred to as the Mediterranean’s only fjord-like bay, and the charming town of Cavtat in Croatia.

Explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Kotor, surrounded by dramatic mountains and encircled by medieval walls.

In Cavtat, enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this hidden gem along the Adriatic coast, with its charming promenade and historic buildings.
