Is There A Better Bucket List Safari Than The Serengeti?
There it was. The first flush of dawn, a ribbon of rose-gold light stretching across the endless grasslands of the Serengeti National Park.
From the window of our safari jeep I watched the light creep up, silhouetting giraffes against the horizon, and even the zebras seemed to pause and watch.
It was more than a photo for my Instagram. Watching the sunrise over the Serengeti felt like the world was holding its breath (I definitely was at times!). There’s a stillness which means you can suddenly hear every sound as life begins to stir for a new day beneath an infinite sky. It wasn’t just beautiful, it was a breathtakingly grounding moment that will stay with me for ever.
As someone who has been on many safaris over the past decade, this trip to the Serengeti in Northern Tanzania remains one of my all-time favourites. Here’s why.
Why This Safari Works
Our 12-day Best Tanzanian Safari itinerary is built for far more than a tick-box wildlife tour.
From the moment you land to the final evening, every detail has been carefully chosen. From the lodges and guides to the transport and the meals – and then you’ve got the actual safaris and locations.
We call the trip “a safari”, and there’s plenty of that involved, but it’s not just about driving around and sitting in vehicles. Aside from the Serengeti itself, you also get to visit Lake Manyara, Moshi town, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park. Which means swimming beneath waterfalls, discovering coffee plantations and walking through treetops in densely packed forests. It’s brilliant.
Rather than just showing up and dipping in, you get well and truly immersed and more often than not, our travellers often walk away feeling like they’ve truly connected with Africa. The small group size (max 16) really helps keep things concentrated too – you get space to ask questions, discuss, swap stories and fully experience Africa with other likeminded people.
Itinerary Highlights – My Best Serengeti Safari Moments, Day-by-Day
Right, well if you’ve had a glance at the Serengeti safari trip itinerary, you’ll already know there’s a LOT to unpack. But I’ll try and sum up a highlight from each day. Here goes:
Day 1: Departing the UK
Bags packed, cameras charged, spirits high. I met the group at Heathrow and, I have to say, I could tell within the hour that this was going to be a tight-knit unit. Everyone already seemed to be on the same page, knowing there was a chance we’d experience something very special together.
There was this tangible sense of anticipation, and it was great hearing a bit about everyone’s background and finding out why they’d decided to go on our best Tanzanian safari trip. One theme kept cropping up: they’d all seen the photos, watched David Attenborough’s films, but they all wanted to feel it and experience this hugely different place for themselves.
Day 2: Arriving in Moshi
After transferring from Kilimanjaro International Airport by a private minibus we got to unwind at Weru Weru River Lodge. A welcome briefing, a relaxed dinner, and your first taste of Tanzanian warmth. The lodges are great, with a lovely pool out in the open.
Next morning, that first breakfast in the bright glass-fronted dining room gives you a taster of what’s to come – you feel you’re already out in the wilderness!
Day 3: Explore Moshi Town
Some of the group slept in late on day 3 – which is definitely not a bad idea after all that flying, good to ease into the rhythm of Tanzania gently! I was up and out pretty early doors into Moshi town. It’s a vibrant and busy town but somehow the pace feels really relaxed, and heading into the markets doesn’t give you that feeling of overwhelm that some can.
You get fabulous views of my old friend Kilimanjaro, there’s plenty of places to grab a nice coffee (and a beer in the afternoon!) and everyone’s friendly. They call Moshi the gateway to Kili as it’s where most climbing trips and lots of safaris start, so I think there’s a really welcoming feeling among the locals, and it’s a great introduction to Africa before heading into the wilderness.
Day 4: Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Tour
One of my favourite days and – shock horror! – it didn’t involve climbing a mountain!
A private transfer took us to Materuni village just outside Kilimanjaro National Park. You def don’t want to forget your swimmers because there’s an amazing opportunity to swim beneath the Materuni Waterfall which, as you can probably imagine, is a pretty incredible experience.
After our swim, we were off to a coffee plantation for a guided tour– was great to see all the activity and try a delicious cup!
Day 5: Tarangire National Park
Day 5 is where we really stepped into nature, in Tarangire National Park. We saw loads of elephants – a sight that never ever gets old. They are wonderful, and the babies are definitely cuter in real life than on all the TV shows.
Apparently the herds can get up to about 300 elephants, and I think we might have seen one that had close to that number – imagine the sound! The trumpeting took me back to watching Jungle Book with the kids, the real thing is quite a bit more exciting though!!
All the baobab trees in create that classic safari landscape across Tarangire’s vast plains; it’s such a beautiful place. And even after our Tarangire tour ended, we were surrounded by just as much beauty, transferring to our tented lodges on the shore of Lake Manyara. A stunning place to end a very exciting day.
Day 6: Lake Manyara
Our day at Lake Manyara was a total contrast to the Tarangire National Park tour. Here it’s all about lush forest, treetop walkways, flamingos shimmering on the lake.
Most people in the group snapped some really stunning photos here, I still find myself scrolling through the photo feed in our WhatsApp group to take me back! Tree climbing lions are rather special after all.
Days 7-9: The Serengeti National Park Safari
This is where the safari magic really peaked. Three full days immersed in the Serengeti, home to the world-famous Great Migration. There are just SO many animals making their way through those sweeping plains. Even after years going on safaris like this one, it still takes me breath.
Our safari team did an amazing job and we were incredible lucky to see all the Big Five and loads of other animals up close. There was something about seeing the wildebeest in such great numbers that really struck me on this trip too, and that “togetherness” of them. They know how to put on a united front!
(Obviously seeing the animals on our Serengeti safari was the absolute highlight of our time here, but I can’t not mention our accommodation at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge – simple but beautiful rooms with amazing views, great food and a lovely pool – it has everything and really tops off this part of the trip. Eating a dinner at the long table with incredible views of Kilimanjaro in the distance is a major pinch-me moment.)
Day 10: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive
Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater feels like entering a lost world. 30,000 hectares of ancient caldera and around 25,000 large animals on the floor. Pretty dramatic that. Completely wild, nothing like anything you can experience anywhere else in the world. Just totally humbling.
Also I know I’ve mentioned food probably a bit too much – but having our lunch in the bush was a special experience!!

Day 11: Return to Moshi
After our transfer back to Moshi there was enough time to nip back to the markets and find some souvenirs to take home. I just bagged some coffee this time, but they’ve got everything there from hand-carved art and jewellery to paintings, instruments and [rather vibrant] fabrics!
Back at the hotel for a final evening to gather thoughts, toast the adventure, and trade stories with the rest of the group. And everyone really does have a different story to tell.
Day 12 – Saying goodbye
No highlight on Day 12; I didn’t want to go! And I was rather jealous of the part of our group who were moving onto Zanzibar for our relaxing beach add-on (definitely recommended if you’ve got the time).

My Best Tips For Doing A Serengeti Safari
Over the years, I’ve learned a few truths about safaris worth sharing:
- Pack for layers: Mornings are cool, afternoons hot, evenings chilled. Neutral colours, breathable fabrics, and a hat go a long way.
- Photography: Dawn and dusk are your best friends. My sunrise photo was taken with a 70-200 mm lens, but even a smartphone captures incredible colour here.
- Listen to your guide: A good guide reads tracks, wind, and sound – just witnessing the way they work is a feat in itself, and then you get to enjoy the results!
- Expect surprises: Some of my favourite memories are unplanned, like the lioness who padded silently past our vehicle one morning.
- Go slow: Don’t chase sightings. Let the wild unfold around you.
- Respect the land: This trip includes community engagement, from the Materuni coffee village to local guides, because understanding the people is part of understanding the place. Ask lots of questions and try some Swahili!
