Where Should I Go In Morocco? Keith’s favourite place might surprise you…
Wondering where should you go in Morocco? Trying to work out if Marrakech lives up to the hype?
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been to Morocco with The Bucket List Company now – whether it’s to climb Mount Toubkal, raft down the Ahansal river or trek the Sahara. Each one of those experiences is pretty epic in itself, and every serious adventurer should stick them on their Bucket List for sure.
But there’s an area of the country that doesn’t often get a look-in in the lists and run-downs of the things you “MUST” do in Morocco. And that’s the coast.
Let’s have a look at why you should look beyond Marrakech when you’re visiting Morocco, and head to the Atlantic instead. (Check out my Instagram post for a bit of starter inspo!)
Why Visit Morocco At All?
I get asked this all the time: why do you always recommend Morocco, Keith? The answer’s simple. It’s the biggest culture shock you can get in under four hours from the UK (and I’ve tested that theory in a lot of different places!).
Step off the plane and you’re in a world of vibrant colours, calls to prayer echoing through the streets, spice‑filled markets, ancient traditions and warm, welcoming locals. It’s exotic, exciting, and yet incredibly accessible and affordable.
The value for money you get in Morocco is brilliant; beautiful riads, delicious tagines, surf lessons, camel rides, market treasures and more, all for a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere. Plus, the Moroccan people are genuinely some of the kindest, most hospitable I’ve ever met. Have I said enough?!

Where Should I Go In Morocco… If I Want More Than The Buzz Of Marrakech Or The Thrill Of Climbing Mount Toubkal?
If you’re not looking to tick something “serious” off the Bucket List, for me, the Atlantic coast is where the magic happens in Morocco. Think surf, chill vibes, yoga at sunrise, open skies, salty air, and friendly faces you may well end up travelling home with.
Here’s my take on five fantastic (mostly!) coastal spots (because if you’ve landed here wondering where should I go in Morocco and want something beyond the medinas and minarets, this is your list). Oh, and don’t panic about flights, you can fly into Marrakech and still get a full coastal fix (more on that later).
#1 Reason To Visit The Moroccan Coast: Taghazout
The sunset surfing village you can’t miss
When friends ask “where should I go in Morocco for a real break”, Taghazout is always top of my list. It’s a small beach village north of Agadir and it’s become a magnet for boards, waves and laid‑back seaside life.
What I loved
Surf: Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned surfer, there are waves for all levels. Taghazout is known for point breaks and consistent surf.
Views & vibe: The village has that relaxed fisherman‑meets‑surf‑town energy. Think colourful little cafés, board racks outside, golden hills behind the beach. It just feels relaxed (which is a welcome break if you’ve already spent a chunk of time in Marrakech, I can assure you!).
Yoga & wellness: After a splash in the Atlantic, there’s always an opportunity to settle into a stretch or a sunset yoga session; the slower pace here really works. (The bars offer good opportunities for wellness too!!)
Food & people: Fresh mint tea first thing, tasty tagine to round off the day, sunsets over the waves, friendly locals, and fellow travellers who you’ll end up chatting with on the terrace.
If you’ve ever asked where should I go in Morocco for that perfect “work hard in the waves, chill harder in the evening” combo, go to Taghazout.

#2 Reason To Visit The Moroccan Coast: Essaouira
Wind, waves and boho seaside soul
It’s not all about surfing over on the Moroccan coast (though it’s got that in spades too of course). If you’re asking where should I go in Morocco and want views, character and excellent food, Essaouira is the obvious answer. It’s a bit further up the Atlantic coast from Taghazout and it’s got that slightly bohemian, artsy-meets-ocean feel.
What makes Essaouira so special?
The wind! The Atlantic breeze gives the place real energy. It’s a wind‑surfing and kitesurfing hotspot as well as surf. And even if you’re not into actually doing any of that stuff, sitting with a cold beer and watching is certainly an activity worth your time…
Old town charm: Its medina, beach and ramparts make for whimsical wandering. Plenty of photo moments, amazing art galleries and cafés by the sea.
Amazing seafood: Fresh from the port, grilled sardines, and that delicious mix of Moroccan dishes and relaxed café culture.
Vibe: Way more relaxed than big tourist cities, more character than a generic beach resort too. For me, it answers the “where should I go in Morocco” when you want a bit of everything: sea, culture, chill.
If you’ve got the time to stretch out and want to explore the coast at a gentler pace, Essaouira hits the sweet spot. And a stop is included in our Moroccan Coastal Adventure! Find out more about the itinerary here.
Hold up! Wondering whether you should visit Agadir while you’re here?
I get asked about Agadir a lot – it’s got an airport, it’s well situated for Essaouira and Taghazout, but… is it worth a stay? My take is that Agadir’s great for a family beach holiday – super convenient, big beaches, nice promenade, safe, clean and sunny. But (gentle but!)… IMHO it feels a bit polished for adventurous solo travellers and there’s not a whole lot to do beyond the beach.
#3 Reason To Visit The Moroccan Coast: Casablanca
Modern Morocco with a coastal twist
Casablanca doesn’t have the ancient allure of Fes or Marrakech, but it gives you a fascinating look at Morocco’s modern heartbeat. Art deco buildings, seaside promenades, it’s a blend of old and new.
Why I wouldn’t skip Casablanca:
Hassan II Mosque: One of the largest and most impressive mosques in the world, right on the ocean. A must-see.
Coastal corniche: Walk by the sea, pop into a café, and watch the sun go down over the Atlantic.
Urban energy: Casablanca gives a taste of Moroccan city life today without you having to go FULL Marrakech! It’s cosmopolitan, busy, and full of stories.
Our Best of Morocco tour kicks off in Casablanca, so you can spend an afternoon exploring this dynamic city before heading out to discover the mountains, deserts, and coastal towns that make Morocco so unforgettable.
#4 Reason To Visit The Moroccan Coast: Rabat
Relaxed capital with a royal heart
Often overlooked in favour of flashier spots, Rabat is Morocco’s capital and actually a real hidden gem. I find it blends modern elegance with historical charm and offers a more chilled-out vibe than many other cities.
Why I wouldn’t write Rabat off:
Historic landmarks: Visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, both beautifully set beside tranquil gardens.
Iconic ocean views: The Kasbah of the Udayas gives you sweeping views over the Atlantic, complete with white-and-blue alleyways that feel a bit like Chefchaouen but right by the sea.
Easy to explore: Rabat’s manageable size, wide boulevards, and laid-back pace make it a stress-free capital to wander.
We stop briefly in Rabat on our Best of Morocco tour, giving you a chance to experience the heart of the country (while still enjoying its coast and culture).
#5 Reason To Visit the Moroccan coast: Chefchaouen
Blue pearl of the mountains (not strictly “coastal”…)
Tucked in the Rif Mountains a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean, Chefchaouen is like…nothing you’ve ever experienced.
Blue-washed walls everywhere, cobbled lanes, chilled mountain air – photographer’s paradise and a peaceful spot to reflect on your Moroccan journey so far. It is stunning.
Why I love Chefchaouen:
Visuals: Chefchaouen just looks insanely cool and is definitely one for the culture Bucket List. It’s possibly the most Instagrammable place in Morocco too.
Relaxation. Beyond the blue facades, there’s a spiritual calm to this town which I love. The slower pace, mountain views and gentle vibe make it the perfect stop after busier cities or more active time on the coast.
Markets & local crafts: Great for picking up handwoven rugs, leather goods and natural beauty products (or so my wife tells me!!).
So it’s not strictly coastal, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Morocco and looking for something beyond Marrakech.
We visit Chefchaouen on our Best of Morocco tour, so you get to wander the alleys, sip mint tea on a terrace with a view, and soak up this peaceful, painterly village.
If You're Flying Into Marrakech …
Of course, many travellers land in Marrakech (it’s a big hub) so: yes, if you’re flying into Marrakech and have the time, definitely spend a day or two in the city.
It’s super fun, bursting with energy, dancing cobras (yes, really), markets, riads, spice‑smells, lively night‑time squares and a whole lot of “Morocco magic”. I do love it.
What I suggest: after arrival, take in the vibrant souks and maze of alleys, perhaps visit the iconic Jardin Majorelle, treat yourself to a fantastic dinner, catch views from a rooftop terrace and soak it all up. Then once you’re filled up on city buzz, head off to the coast for the next level of experience. (You can find a longer list of my favourite things to do in the city here).
For shopping in Marrakech: Make sure you check out our guide to shopping in the souks so you can have fun in the markets, find something amazing to bring home, without paying an arm and a leg for it.
Planning A Relaxing Morocco Trip - What I’d Do
Putting aside my adrenaline addiction and forgetting activities like climbing Mount Toubkal, trekking the Sahara or rafting the Ahansal for a moment, here’s how I’d map out a more relaxing trip to Moroccan coast:
- Arrive into Marrakech, stay 1‑2 nights (see above – I don’t think ).
- Transfer to Taghazout for 3‑4 nights: surf, yoga, relax.
- Option to move on to Essaouira for another 2‑3 nights: explore calm vibes, good food, wind‑surf or just soak.
- Go north for a couple of days – if you’ve got the time, you cannot miss Chefchaouen.
- Head back or fly out from Marrakech (or Agadir, if it’s more convenient).
A coast‑first plan for Morocco like this means you’re not just in the tourist bubble, you’re discovering Morocco’s amazing coastal rhythm, with a group of like‑minded travellers (if you join one of our trips).
Remember, 73% of our travellers come solo but leave with mates, so if you’re going by yourself, you’re absolutely in good company.
If you’ve got more questions about visiting Morocco (or want to know more about those higher energy trips I just mentioned…), don’t hesitate to give us a buzz on 01769 309007 – we always love to talk travel.
So there you have it: when people ask me where should I go in Morocco, I’m shouting ‘the coast!’ with arms raised. Taghazout, Essaouira and our full tour circuit including Casablanca, Rabat and Chefchaouen are the places I keep coming back to because they deliver rhythm, adventure and connection.
