Spanish Adventure Holidays: What NEEDS To Be In Your Itinerary?
So you’ve discovered the secret, have you? Spain is Europe’s best destination for an adventure holiday.
With great weather, affordable travel options, beautiful food and incredible topography, you’ve got an adventure junkie’s paradise wrapped and ready to go.
But if you’re thinking of heading to the Costa Blanca, Spain’s greatest adventure hub, what needs to go on your itinerary? Climbing? Of course. Biking? Yes please. Canyoning? Don’t mind if I do.
Let’s fill you in on a few things that absolutely HAVE to go on your Spanish adventure itinerary if you really want to make the most of your trip.
Rock climbing in the Costa Blanca: why do it?
Rock climbing is one of the BEST things you can do on an adventure holiday in the Costa Blanca. Given the area’s vast range of rock faces, the Costa Blanca is nothing short of spectacular.
Dramatic limestone cliffs and crags offer a mix of routes for all abilities, from beginners to seasoned climbers. The region’s unique topography, carved by centuries of natural erosion, mean there’s something different around every corner.
Think towering sea cliffs, technical overhangs, and long multi-pitch routes that stretch high above the sparkling Mediterranean.
Then, you’ve got the via ferrata (or ‘iron path’ if Spanish isn’t your forte). A protected climbing route in the mountains where you’ll navigate fixed steel cables, rungs and ladders. Amazing!
Beginners can enjoy easily accessible single-pitch climbs with plenty of grip, while experienced climbers can tackle world-class routes like those at the iconic Puig Campana or the Penyal d’Ifac. The breathtaking views are an added reward, whether you’re looking down on lush valleys, picturesque villages, or the endless blue sea below.
Honestly, there’s so many options when it comes to climbing in the Costa Blanca that you might not know what to do with yourself. In which case, the good news is that we’ve done the thinking for you and already put together a tantalising itinerary right HERE.
And so you know, our guides are on hand to teach you the basics if you’re new to the sport, and keep you safe whatever your level.
Canyoning: what it is and why it’s so epic
Canyoning is another extremely popular activity in the Costa Blanca, and one that’s sure to get your heart racing.
Canyons are narrow, deep valleys, with steep walls of rock on either side. They’re usually formed by erosion from rivers over millions of years and they’re certainly a sight to behold.
Most of the canyons you’ll find in the area are now dry, making it a bit like rock climbing, but where you’re going down rather than up.
You’ll use techniques such as hiking, climbing, scrambling (which is a mix between hiking and climbing), jumping and even rappelling. For the occasional wet canyon, you’ll get to put your swimming to the test too.
The Costa Blanca is perfect for canyoning due to its topography, terrain, and stunning natural landscape.
Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before because our guides are always on hand to reassure you and keep you safe (and make sure you have your fill of fun too).
It’s honestly quite hard to do it justice – once you’ve experienced it for yourself, you’ll see what I mean. Click HERE to find out more about our trip.
Experiencing the Costa Blanca on two wheels: the downhill bike ride
The Costa Blanca’s spectacular mountain ranges don’t just make for awesome climbing experiences.
The mountain roads are pretty fun to ride down too.
The downhill bike ride is a unique way to experience the area, winding 30km through the villages of Penaguila and Alcoleja.
All while admiring astonishing views of the Spanish shoreline on your descent.
The terrain is nice and smooth, giving you a relaxing, bump-free ride to the bottom. And because so much of it is downhill, it’s still a great activity for people who don’t fancy themselves the strongest of cyclers.
And when you reach the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing drink for your efforts – not a bad day’s work! Click HERE to find out more.
What about when you need a rest?
I get it… all those activities sound great, but also pretty exhausting.
The thing is, the Costa Blanca has so much else to see and do, so when you’ve had your fix of adventure for the day, you won’t find yourself getting bored exploring the local area.
Beautiful beaches, fascinating old towns, and vibrant street markets await you… and then there’s the food!
Spain is one of the food capitals of Europe and our Bucket List Company trip ensures you’re given the evenings to experience it for yourself, while having breakfasts and lunches provided for you, so you’ve got enough energy for the day’s activities.
