Why Is Gozo So Good For Diving?
Let’s start with the big question.
Gozo is the definition of an adventure diver’s paradise.
This tiny little island north of Malta is surrounded by deep blue water, carved through with tunnels, caves, swim-throughs, chimneys and walls that drop off into the kind of abyss that makes your stomach flutter.
It’s here that Gozo scuba diving earns its reputation, and we don’t reckon there’s anywhere else quite like it this side of the equator.

Incredible visibility
It’s not unusual to get 20 to 30 metres of visibility. On a good day, even more. That’s GOOD! And it’s down to the combination of clean limestone, minimal sand, and calm currents that keeps water clarity consistently impressive.
A genuine mix of sites for all levels
You don’t need to be an experienced diver to enjoy Gozo. Beginners get calm, shallow bays with sheltered entry points. More confident divers get caves, arches, deep walls and natural structures that feel almost purpose-built for underwater exploring.
Mostly shore diving
This is one of the biggest surprises for most people. You can access many of the island’s top dive sites from the shore; no boats, no big groups, no rush. Just kit up, walk in, and drop into another world.
Warm water for most of the year
Peak summer temperatures sit around 26 – 28°C. Even spring and autumn are comfortable, which makes Gozo scuba diving a realistic option outside the traditional summer season.
Unique underwater landscapes
Gozo has been shaped by thousands of years of geological movement. Caves, chimneys, arches and collapsed rock formations create some of the most distinctive underwater scenery in Europe. Pretty stunning if you ask us.

Where Are The Best Spots For Diving In Gozo?
This is the section that experienced divers usually scroll straight to, and fair enough. Gozo has some absolute icons. Here are the highlights you shouldn’t miss on a Gozo scuba diving trip.
- The Blue Hole (Dwejra)
An internationally famous dive site and often considered one of the top in Europe. You enter through a collapsed limestone sinkhole before dropping into a dramatic cavern and out into open water. The arch, the sheer walls, the play of light… it’s world-class.
Why it’s special: Natural architecture, deep walls, huge visibility, and that unforgettable exit into the open sea.
- Inland Sea Tunnel
A completely unique dive that starts in an inland lagoon and heads through a long tunnel into the open ocean. The contrast in light is amazing, and the sense of scale as you emerge is unlike anywhere else.
Why it’s special: Massive vertical walls inside the tunnel and a genuinely atmospheric feeling as you pass from darkness into bright blue water.
- Reqqa Point
A dream site for experienced divers who like a bit of adventure. Expect drop-offs, swim-throughs, and a chance to see big schools of fish cruising the wall.
Why it’s special: Depth, dramatic formations, and the potential for larger marine life.
- Cathedral Cave
This one is all about atmosphere. A huge dome-shaped cavern with air pockets, shimmering reflections, and incredibly still water.
Why it’s special: The brilliant blue light inside the cave feels otherworldly.
- Mgarr ix-Xini
Once you’ve learnt how to pronounce it, Mgarr ix-Xini makes a great introduction site; calm, sheltered and perfect for beginners or anyone working on buoyancy or new skills.
Why it’s special: Tranquil, easy entry, great practice site.
- Karwela Wreck
Gozo’s most famous wreck, with staircases, walkways and easily navigated penetration routes. It’s photogenic, atmospheric and full of character.
Why it’s special: An incredible wreck with multiple levels and wide swim-throughs.

What To Pack For Diving In Gozo
Packing for a Gozo scuba diving trip is all about balance. The island is warm, relaxed and wonderfully easy to get around, but the diving can be adventurous, so you’ll want the right gear. (Remember, you can always hire most of this stuff once you get there!)
Here’s what we recommend:
- Mask and snorkel: The water is so clear you’ll want a mask that fits perfectly.
- Shorty or 5mm wetsuit (season dependent): Summer: 3mm–5mm, Spring/autumn: 5mm, Winter: 7mm or drysuit – though if you’re bringing your own and coming with us we can always help you decide.
- Boots and open-heel fins: Most dive sites are shore entries over rock. Sturdy footwear = much easier entries.
- For the really serious, dive computer: Some sites are deep. Computers give you confidence and let you focus on enjoying the dive.
- Reef-safe sunscreen: The Mediterranean sun can catch you quicker than you expect.
- Light jacket or hoodie for evenings: Gozo cools off once the sun dips behind the limestone cliffs.
- Dry bag: Perfect for shore days and keeping your kit organised.
- Backup torch: Even if you’re not planning full cave dives, the tunnels are spectacular with a torch.
- Logbook: You’ll want to remember these dives, trust us!

What’s The Weather Like In Gozo?
Gozo’s weather is one of the big reasons it’s such a reliable diving destination. The island sits in the heart of the Mediterranean and enjoys long summers, mild winters and stable shoulder seasons.
Here’s what to expect through the year:
- Spring: Warm, bright and great for diving. Water around 18 – 21°C.
- Summer: Hot days, warm water (up to 28°C), and long, calm evenings.
- Autumn: Fantastic for diving with warm water, fewer crowds, stable conditions.
- Winter: Cooler but still perfectly diveable, and often with brilliant visibility.
