India is one of the most diverse countries in the world – both in terms of its culture and its nature. In fact, the country is the world’s largest democracy, and here people from many backgrounds and religions live side by side. Here you will find a rich history, experienced in everything from the architecture to the food. From rugged Himalayan peaks to verdant jungles, the landscapes are similarly varied – as is the wildlife, with everything from tigers to unique monkeys.

For the most part, the country has a tropical climate which throughout most of the interior is a mixture of wet and dry tropical weather. In northern parts there is a humid tropical climate and along the western coast lies wet tropical areas.

Which Plug Do I Need in India?

For India there are three associated plug types, types C, D and M. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins, plug type D is the plug which has three round pins in a triangular pattern and plug type M is the plug which also has three round pins.

You’ll find that most vendors accept Visa and Mastercard, while some large establishments may accept American Express and Discover cards as well.

Tipping in India

Tips are not included in the overall price of our treks and adventure trips, but most trekkers do tip their guides, porters, and cooks on the penultimate or final day of the trip. Tipping is a universal custom in adventure travel, but is not obligatory, so you should never feel forced into it, but it is a tradition on the trail. Tipping policies can be found through the Vamoos app for each individual trip.

COVID-19 Requirements for India? (January 2024)

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering India.

Vaccination requirements for India (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and vaccination certificates you may need on TravelHealthPro (from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre).

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

  • polio
  • yellow fever

Do I Need a Visa for India? (January 2024)

Apply for the right type of visa for the purpose of your travel.

You need a visa to travel to India unless you are an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.

India has a number of visa categories. Make sure you get the right visa for the purpose and duration of your travel.

Penalties for having the wrong visa can include refusal of entry or deportation. This may also include not being allowed to enter India in the future.
