How Much Does It Cost to Visit India?

Just tapped “How much does it cost to visit India?” into Google and wondering if you’re in the right place? Good news, this is exactly where you need to be…

If Asia’s on your Bucket List, it doesn’t get much better than India. One of the world’s biggest countries, full to the brim with culture, architecture and flavour. It really is a must-see for keen travellers but one important question for anyone considering going: how much does it cost to visit India?

From food to accommodation, there’s amazing value to be found everywhere. Of course, you can make it as expensive and luxurious as your heart desires, but it’s also a great place for people operating on a budget. There’s something for everyone, and that’s what makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations out there.

Let’s delve into the details…

How much does accommodation cost in India?

First thing’s first, where are you going to spend the night? Obviously, the bigger cities like Delhi and Mumbai will cost a little extra but on the whole, accommodation in India is very cheap.

For a nice, simple hotel room to yourself (where breakfast is sometimes included) you’ll be looking to pay around £15. Hostels are cheaper, closer to the £7 mark, while luxury hotels will be around £100.

Twin-share accommodation is included in your Indian Himalayan Adventure with The Bucket List Company – find out more here.

How much does food cost in India?

For all you foodies, India is the place to go. Boasting some of the most distinct and interesting flavours and spices anywhere in the world, there are so many things in this country you have to try. And the best part is it won’t cost you much to do so.

From kofta to traditional curries (not like the ones we’re used to in the UK), every meal offers something new and exciting.

A simple meal at most restaurants will cost you just a few pounds. If you’re looking for something a bit fancier, you can indulge in a delicious dinner at a 5-star hotel for around £10 – an absolute steal for anyone looking for an unforgettable taste experience.

And while you’re at it, you have to experience India’s famous street food culture. Delhi is the most well-known, its thousands of stalls feeding tens of millions of locals and tourists every year. Whether it’s chaat, gol gappas or kebabs, there’s bound to be something to get you salivating, most of which is under 20p.

Just make sure you’re careful. Poor hygiene at some stalls can lead to food poisoning, known in the city as Delhi-belly. Make sure you know what it is you’re eating and try to stick to stalls other people are buying from.

How much does local transport cost in India?

India is one of the most beautiful countries to walk around but there will be times when you need to make use of the public transport in whatever city you’re in.

Places like Delhi and Mumbai are famous for their rickshaw system, which is a thoroughly authentic way to get from A to B. This will generally cost you less than a pound, as will a shared taxi if you’re after a less exhilarating (but more familiar) way of travelling.

There’s also a bus system which costs less than a pound and you can hire a car for your visit for anywhere from £30 to £90 (good luck navigating those busy cities though!).

How much does it cost to do things in India?

India is full to the brim with culture and tradition. Why not visit the astonishing Golden Temple (free admission) or the staggering Amber Palace (under £5, with an elephant ride just an extra £10)? I’m sure you’ve heard of the Great Wall of China, but what about the Great Wall of India, the second-longest continuous wall on the planet (for around the £5 mark)?

Then there’s the Taj Mahal, one of the modern seven wonders of the world. An architectural phenomenon and tourist hotspot, it really is a site you have to see in-person, and it will only cost you about £10.

If you’re looking to get away from the bustle of city life for a while, hop on a boat in Kerala to see lush green jungles and forests. (Prices go from under £10 to £100 depending on the package and company you choose). And if you want to get even closer to nature, take a trip to Ranthambore National Park to go tiger spotting for around £30.

Deserts are spectacular places but they’re also quite big (actually, very big), so take a break from walking and ride on a camel in the Thar Desert instead for under £25.

I’m sure you’ll love the food Delhi has to offer and if you’re interested in learning how to make it, you can do so for around £35. Totally worth it for all the skills and recipes you can bring back to the UK to wow your friends with.

For any film-lovers, the Bollywood tour is an essential. India is the largest producer of films anywhere in the world, so learn for yourself how a project goes from script to screen. These tours are on the more expensive end of things to do but for around £135, this experience is still great value.

And for those after something a little more extreme during their trip, allow me to present our India Himalayan Adventure. For 12 days, you can witness some of the most scenic parts of the country, all with our professional, friendly hiking guides and other travellers.

Travel over the Ganges River via a 400-metre zipline; visit the wonderful Jim Corbett National Park and the Taj Mahal; and hike uphill to get a panoramic view of the Ganges.

Is a trip to India worth it?

Absolutely!

India really is a must-see for anyone looking to learn about a different culture, in one of the most vibrant and fascinating countries in the world. Full of beautiful buildings, stunning scenery and delectable delicacies, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

It’s a pretty cheap place to go as well. Most of the money you’ll spend will be on activities but there’s still plenty of things to see without spending a penny (or should I say, rupee).

As I said, if you’re looking for something a little more challenging, our Indian Himalayan Adventure is the thing for you, the perfect mix of physical activities and cultural sight-seeing. From just £2,700, your accommodation, activities and most of your food will be taken care of, and by paying in monthly instalments, you don’t have to cough up a whole load of cash in one go.
