What are the customs rules for the Maldives from the UK?

You’ll need to declare anything that could be subject to tax or duty when entering the Maldives, and it’s also illegal to bring in anything that could be seen to be contrary to Islam. Best leave your idols and bibles at home. Definitely don’t bring any pork or alcohol in either, and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Does that mean you can’t drink any alcohol when you’re in the Maldives? Nope, it doesn’t, but you definitely won’t be able to buy any in the shops as the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives. There ARE exceptions though – in island resorts and floating bars, where you can get your favourite tipple (just be prepared to pay a high price for the privilege).

Booze will be the last thing on your mind when you’ve got an itinerary like this to play with! If you’re thinking of travelling to the Maldives, click here to find out how to do it Bucket List Company style, and check out our jam-packed schedule of excitement, relaxation, forest walks, mangrove kayaking… and lots and lots of tropical fish.

How much money should I take to the Maldives from the UK?

Ah, the money talk – always a bit tricky but crucial for a smooth journey. The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the official currency, but US dollars are widely accepted too, and credit cards tend to be accepted for all resort transactions.

You’re not allowed to bring more than $10,000 in cash into the country with you without declaring it – not that we’d ever recommend carrying anywhere near that amount.

Having some local currency on hand for the fabulous local markets or smaller establishments is a smart move though. But, and it’s a big but, there’s no need to go overboard. Set a budget, stick to it, and focus on creating unforgettable memories rather than counting pennies.
