Do I Need a Visa for Thailand from the UK?

‘Do I need a visa for Thailand from the UK?’ – it’s a good question if you’re thinking of visiting the Land of Smiles.

Thailand is consistently one of the most popular holiday destinations anywhere in the world, and for good reason – with a medley of dense rainforests, crystal-clear waters, stunning mountains, and delicious food, it’s no wonder why thousands make the trip every year.

But before you start imagining yourself as one of those people, let’s clarify whether you need a visa to visit Thailand from the UK.

Visa-free travel to Thailand

Good news for UK travellers!

If you’re visiting as a tourist and entering via air or land, there’s you don’t need to get a visa for Thailand, as long as you’re not staying for more than 60 days.

Once you’re there, if you decide you want to stay for a bit longer (which is a distinct possibility in a place like Thailand!), you can extend your stay for another 30 days. You can only do this once and you have to go to a Thai immigration office to do it.

If you do end up overstaying your welcome in Thailand, you’ll be fined between 500 and 20,000 baht (over £450) every day. You could also be deported, held in detention, or permanently banned from the country.

Basically, just keep a note of the date you need to be gone by.

Passport requirements for Thailand from the UK

Chances are you have your passport’s expiration date burned into your brain at all times if you’re a frequent traveller, but if you don’t… go and check NOW!

Like most countries, Thailand requires you have at least 6 months left on your passport from the date you enter, so if yours is soon to run out, get it renewed ASAP (we all know what the UK passport office is like…).

When you enter the country, make sure you get your passport stamped by the immigration desk too. It’s also a good idea to have handy info about the first hotel you’re staying at, details of onward or return flights, proof of sufficient funds, and evidence of travel health insurance. Some airports ask for this stuff, others don’t – best to be on the safe side.

As with all visa and passport related matters, make sure to keep updated and check the requirements of the country you’re entering before you travel – you can do that here.

You can also only take the equivalent of £15,800 – but you probably weren’t planning on doing that anyway, right?!
