Do I Need A Visa For Cuba From The UK?
Daydreaming about the vibrant streets of Havana, the pristine beaches of Varadero, or the lush landscapes of Viñales? If Cuba’s calling your name, we’re here to help you answer that call!
But before you drift into complete reverie, let’s quickly check you’ve got the boring stuff sorted. Here’s the nitty-gritty details of travel requirements. A-woo-hoo!
But seriously… Do you need a visa for Cuba from the UK? What about passport regulations? Let’s make sure you’ve got all the information you need, so you can get back to that Cuban sandwich you were salivating over.
Do you need a visa for Cuba from the UK?
Yes, yes you do.
First things first, YES, you do need a visa to enter Cuba if you’re traveling from the UK.
(Always check the latest entry requirements advice from the Gov.uk Cuba travel page, but don’t worry, none of it’s as daunting as it sounds.)
Here’s the deal: you’ll need a Tourist Card, which can be easily obtained through various channels including travel agencies, airlines, or directly from the Cuban Embassy in London. Or you can ask for our help when you travel to Cuba with The Bucket List Company!
Your tourist card for Cuba
The Tourist Card grants you a stay of up to 30 days, which can be extended once you’re in Cuba for an additional 30 days.
Proof of onward travel – and no entry from the USA
You’ll also need to have proof of onward or return travel (so you can demonstrate your intent to leave within 30 days). And don’t forget, no-one is allowed to travel directly from the USA to Cuba for tourism (and you’d need a US visa to go from Cuba to the USA too).
Checks at border control
At least 72 hours before you arrive in Cuba, you’ll need to complete an arrival form on the D’Viajeros traveller information portal. You’ll receive a QR code to show to the authorities when you arrive. It’s all pretty simple in practice.

Are there any passport requirements for Cuba from the UK?
Yep, nothing unusual though!
Again, everything’s pretty simple when it comes to preparing your passport for a trip to Cuba.
Your passport has to be valid for at least two months beyond your intended stay in Cuba – ALWAYS safest to have at least six months validity on it though, we reckon.
Go right now and check your passport is up-to-date and has enough blank pages for entry and exit stamps. It’s also a good idea to have photocopies of your passport and other important documents, just in case.
Currency: CUC vs CUP
Confusingly, Cuba operates on two currencies: the Cuban Peso (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC).
The CUC is being phased out, so most transactions will be in CUP. It’s important to exchange your money at official exchange offices or banks to get the best rate and avoid scams. (The UK is fine, but credit and debit cards issued by US banks won’t work in Cuba, so make sure to bring enough cash to cover your expenses if you can’t use your card).
Packing tips for a Cuban Adventure
Let’s face it: it’s Cuba, you’re going to have an amazing time. But your Cuban adventure will be even better if you remember all your essentials in your bag! Don’t forget any of these:
- Travel Insurance: Essential for any trip, especially one as adventurous as Cuba.
- Adaptor: Cuba uses 110V, 60Hz with Type A/B plugs. A travel adaptor will keep your gadgets charged.
- Powerbank: You can never have enough of them!
- Comfortable shoes: Whether you’re strolling through Havana or hiking in the countryside, sturdy, supportive shoes are a must.
- Sunscreen and bug spray: The Cuban sun can be intense, and there are mosquitoes, so protect yourself against them.
