Best Things To Do In Turkey

What are the best things to do in Turkey? Look no further than Cappadocia, Turkey’s land of enchantment, where fairy chimneys pierce the sky and ancient cave dwellings whisper tales of bygone eras.

If you’re looking for something to light up your Instagram, this is it.

It’s a unique destination that offers a perfect blend of natural wonders, rich history, and unforgettable experiences.

And if you’re thinking about adventuring on the journey of a lifetime to Cappadocia, then you probably want to know what the best things to do are… right?

Let’s take a look…

Göreme Open-Air Museum

Kayseri, the gateway to the mesmerising region of Cappadocia is a fantastic starting point for any trip (that may or may not be why we begin our Discover Cappadocia trip there!).

The landscape in Göreme unfolds before you, revealing the iconic fairy chimneys and otherworldly rock formations that make Cappadocia famous – it’s definitely bucket list-worthy.

The of Göreme Open-Air Museum itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a treasure trove of churches, chapels and monasteries that date back as far as the 10th century.

It’s worth taking a moment to admire the Byzantine frescoes adorning the cave walls, each telling a story of early Christian life in Cappadocia.

If you want to find out more about Göreme Open-Air Museum, it’s on day one of our itinerary in our Discover Cappadocia trip here.

Hot Air Balloon Rides And Underground Cities

No visit to Cappadocia is complete without experiencing its most iconic activity – a hot air balloon flight at sunrise.

As you gently ascend into the dawn sky, witness the landscape transform into a sea of pastel hues, while the otherworldly rock formations, valleys, and vineyards stretch out beneath you, creating a truly magical spectacle

But it’s not just up above the ground that’s spectacular in Cappadocia, it’s below it too… thanks to its incredible underground cities!

These vast subterranean complexes, such as Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, were carved by ancient civilisations seeking refuge from invaders. Explore the maze-like tunnels, living quarters, and storage rooms, marvelling at the ingenuity of their creators

Hikes, Pottery and Getting Cultural

We’ll always stand by the belief that any day that involves a hike is a day well spent – and in the stunning landscape of the Red and Rose Valleys of Cappadocia, how could you say no?

These picturesque canyons offer a kaleidoscope of colours, from deep reds to soft pinks, especially beautiful during sunset. As you walk, discover hidden rock-cut churches and enjoy panoramic views of the surreal landscape – more on this one later!

Culture is the name of the game on any TBLC trip and Turkey/Cappadocia is certainly no different. Which is why we love getting stuck into the ancient art of pottery making in Avanos, which is renowned for its ceramics.

You might even find a new hobby when you’re busy learning traditional techniques… and yes, you will get a souvenir of your own creation to take home with you.

Fancy yourself as an intrepid adventurer who loves a hike in some of the world’s most beautiful valleys? Or think you’ve got what it takes to become a pottery master? Check out our Discover Cappadocia itinerary here.

Getting Back on the Horse

As the old saying goes, sometimes you just need to get back on the horse… literally.

Whether you’re an experienced horse rider or you’ve never been within 6 feet of a stallion, don’t worry! Exploring Cappadocia the way it’s meant to be explored is what we’re all about…

Which is why we do as the ancient Hittites did and get around on horseback to enjoy a ride through the valleys, checking out fairy chimneys, cave dwellings and some seriously stunning views along the way.

And as the night falls, it’s time to immerse yourself in Turkish culture with a traditional dinner and folk-dance show. Savour local delicacies, enjoy live music, and watch mesmerising performances that bring Cappadocia’s rich heritage to life – what’s not to love?
