Best Things To Do In Bhutan

Looking for the best things to do in Bhutan? You’re in the right place. And it’s a good thing you came to have a look too, since the mountainous “Land of Thunder Dragon” is wrapped in so much mystery that the best bits of Bhutan are relatively unknown.

It’s a beautiful country, nestled deep within South Asia between its much (MUCH!) bigger neighbours, India and China. It’s where spirituality, nature, and traditions are intertwined. And it’s the perfect hidden gem of a destination for your next Bucket List trip.

In this guide to the best things to do in Bhutan, we’ll show you what not to miss.

Trek Through The Himalayas

Most mountain enthusiasts know the Himalayas trail through India, Nepal, China and Pakistan. But did you know Bhutan got the call-up too?

So when it comes to must-do things in Bhutan, trekking through the mighty Himalayas tops the list. I mean… why wouldn’t you?!

Whether you choose the arduous Snowman Trek or the shorter Taktsang Monastery trek, the mystical landscapes, untouched wilderness, and panoramic mountain views are certainly worth the effort.

Witness The Divine Madman’s Legacy: Chimi Lhakhang

Discover the unique temple of Chimi Lhakhang, known for its association with Bhutan’s favourite saint, Lama Drukpa Kunley or the Divine Madman. With a name like that, I think it’s safe to say he’s our favourite saint too.

The lively tales of his eccentric teaching methods and divine madness make the temple a really interesting cultural stop. And the journey to get there is rather beautiful too.

Don’t Forget The Dzongs: Centres Of Administration & Monastic Life

Exploring Bhutan’s magnificent Dzongs (fortresses) gives you a deep insight into the kingdom’s spiritual and administrative life.

Don’t miss the Punakha Dzong, the old home to the Bhutanese Government until the capital moved to Thimphu in 1955. It’s set in the most beautiful riverside location and is arguably the country’s most beautiful fortress. Stick Thimphu’s Tashichho Dzong on your list too, and you’ll get to see the king’s throne room.

Hike to Taktsang Monastery

No visit to Bhutan is complete without a hike to the Taktsang Monastery or the Tiger’s Nest, somewhat precariously perched on a clifftop and considered one of Bhutan’s holiest sites.

Seriously, when we say precariously, we mean it. This visit isn’t for the fainthearted, and if you’re not great with heights, maybe don’t look out the windows…

It’s a challenging trek to get there but the rewards are massive; breathtaking views, a serene spiritual atmosphere, and memories you won’t forget in a hurry.

Eat Bhutanese Food: Your Taste Buds Will Thank You

Bhutanese cuisine is a real treat if you love bold, earthy flavours and a bit of spice. The national dish, Ema Datshi, is a must-try. It’s basically chili peppers (yes, they count as a vegetable in Bhutan!) simmered with cheese, for a fiery, creamy combo that’s definitely what you’d call ‘unforgettable’.

You’ll also find Phaksha Paa, a hearty pork dish with radishes and chilies, and Jasha Maru, a spicy chicken stew that’s perfect for those cooler Himalayan evenings. Expect red rice on the side, with its slightly nutty flavour, and plenty of fresh or dried chilies in most dishes. Bhutanese food is all about warmth, comfort, and a hint of adventure – bon appétit!

Head To The Vibrant Tshechu Festivals

Right at the centre of Bhutan’s cultural heart are the Tshechu Festivals, held annually (but in several different locations, so there’s one happening somewhere most months).

Vibrant, loud, super fun, and seriously colourful, these fabulous festivals involve religious mask dances, traditional music, colourful attire, and local delicacies, promising an unforgettable cultural experience. You’ll love them.

Take A Spiritual Journey And Visit The 108 Chortens At Dochula Pass

The Dochula Pass is a beautiful mountain pass on the road from Thimphu to Punakha, where 108 memorial chortens commemorate the lives of 108 soldiers lost in the 2003 war against insurgents from India.

It’s a stunning, sacred place with unmatched panoramic views of the Himalayas and the most peaceful atmosphere you’ll find just about anywhere in the world. Honestly, the spiritual aura and tranquillity here are really soul-soothing, and not something you’d want to miss.

Watch The National Sport: Go To An Archery Match!

Now that’s something you don’t see every day… Witness the skill and precision of Bhutanese archers at a traditional archery match, the kingdom’s national sport.

The enthusiasm of the crowds (and the archers!), the traditional attire, the friendly rivalry, and the vibrant celebrations after every hit are VERY entertaining to watch.

Check Out Some Bhutanese Art At Thimphu's Art School

Visiting Thimphu’s National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students study traditional arts, gives you an insight into the kingdom’s artistic heritage.

From sculpture to painting, the meticulous craftsmanship on display is mesmerising. If you’re an art buff, make sure you squeeze a visit in, and you won’t be disappointed.

Meet The Black-Necked Cranes In Phobjikha Valley

Nature enthusiasts can’t miss the opportunity to visit the Phobjikha Valley, where endangered black-necked cranes migrate every winter.

The locals even celebrate these birds’ arrival with the famous Black-Necked Crane Festival, a unique experience for wildlife lovers. It’s not every day a bird gets a whole festival dedicated to them!

Experience a Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath

After all that activity, make sure you revitalise your senses and indulge in a traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath, known for its therapeutic benefits.

Stones are heated and immersed in water in a wooden tub, releasing minerals that are believed to cure various ailments. It’s very relaxing and a welcome end to any day spent exploring on your feet.
