This is the first Sahara Desert Trek in Morocco we are running and we are extremely excited to do so, as we know it’s on so many people’s Bucket Lists – including ours! We visit Morocco for our Mount Toubkal Climbs

The Sahara Desert, Arabic for ‘The Great Desert’, is the World’s largest hot desert, at 3.6 million square miles it practically engulfs North Africa. It has one of the harshest environments on the planet and covers large sections of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia.

The highest peak in the Sahara is the volcano Emi Koussi, standing at 3,415 meters in the Tibesti Mountains in northern Chad. The desert’s other mountains and mountain ranges include the Aïr Mountains, Hoggar Mountains, Saharan Atlas, Tibesti Mountains, Adrar des Iforas and the Red Sea hills.

Most people imagine the Sahara Desert Trek as a vast, sandy landscape, dotted with sand dunes. Granted, the desert does have its share of dunes knows as ergs, (large areas of shifting dunes which may travel several yards in a year) with some of some of them reaching up to 180 meters! However, most of the Sahara is characterized as rocky hamada, a type of desert landscape that has very little sand and is made up of primarily gravel plains. It is estimated the Sahara is actually only 30% sand and 70% gravel!

It is also thought that the climate of the Sahara is hot all year round, but this is not the case. Between December and February temperatures plunge due to lack of humidity and it has even been known for snow to be seen on the top of sand dunes! However, the Sahara did reach a record in 1993 when the temperature hit 136 degrees! The Sahara has various climatic conditions, dependant on where you are.

Itinerary

This is a sample of what this
adventure's Itinerary would look like:

    Day 1: Arrival to Marrakech:

It doesn’t matter at what time you arrive, we will be waiting for you at the airport in Marrakech. We then transfer to the hotel in the centre of the city. While all the participants arrive, you can spend the afternoon visiting Marrakech.

    Day 2: Marrakech to Faija:

We take a scenic drive across the High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate and then Zagora. It takes almost 8 hours driving, passing along date-palm oases, Berber villages, and incredible landscapes. In Zagora we leave the minibus and take a more appropriate vehicle that will take us to Faija. There we meet the camels and their cameleers.

    Day 3: Faja to Campsite:

Today we start our trek. In the morning we load the camels and head to Hamada. We have good views of the Saghro Mountains, with little vegetation, and maybe some Bedouin nomads. After lunch in an oasis, we walk along dried riverbeds and arrive at the campsite at sunset. Walking time: 6h30

Day 4: Campsite to Dunes of Chegaga:

We climb to the Abbes pass, from where we can observe the vastness of the desert. Far away we can already spot the dunes of Chegaga. We get to them later in the afternoon. Walking time: 6h30

Day 5: Dunes of Chegaga to Dunes of Bougarne :

After walking the multitude of small sand dunes of Chegaga, we continue towards M’hamid. We eat under the trees of Tamares, and in the evening we arrive at dunes of Bougarne, a site rarely frequented by the tourists. Walking time: 5h

Day 6: Dunes of Bougarne to Dunes of Oued Naam :

We wake up early in order to contemplate the dawn on the dunes of Bougarne. The rest of the day we walk on a huge rocky plateau, and we reach the dunes of Oued Naam late in the afternoon. Walking time: 6h30

Day 7: Dunes of Oued Naam to Dunes of Mhamid to Marrakesh :

This last stage of the trek takes place along beautiful desert landscapes, and an immense plateau of small dunes. Without realizing it, we reach the Regaga dunes and then Mhamid. Here the trek reaches an end. Later, we continue by car along the Draa valley to Zagora. Transfer to Marrakech. Walking time: 3h

Day 8 Transfer to Marrakech Airport:

Transfer to the airport of Marrakech, where we bid farewell until our next adventure together.
